Statement from CHP Spokesperson Yücel on Ahmet Özer's release: Trust in justice has been damaged
CHP Spokesperson Deniz Yücel issued a written statement regarding the release of Esenyurt Mayor Ahmet Özer, who had been in prison for over a year, following a preliminary review of his case.
Yücel stated that the release decision was gratifying but pointed out that Özer should not have been arrested in the first place.
"It is, of course, very gratifying that our Esenyurt Mayor, Mr. Ahmet Özer, who has been held unjustly and unlawfully in the Silivri dungeon for over a year, has been released following a preliminary review," said Yücel, adding that depriving an elected mayor of his freedom for such a long time has "damaged the trust and belief in justice to an irreparable extent," and made the following statement:
"Just like Ahmet Özer, all our mayors, administrators, and bureaucrats whose freedom has been usurped unjustly and unlawfully must be released immediately; the ugly games and unlawful moves played against the people's party, the Republican People's Party, must be ended, and a return to the rule of law must be made as soon as possible."
