CHP's Tanal reacts to Kabaş detention: 'Contrary to the principle of proportionality'

Republican People's Party (CHP) Şanlıurfa MP Mahmut Tanal stated in a post shared on X regarding the detention order that the decision was 'contrary to the principle of proportionality'.

Journalist Sedef Kabaş was taken into custody on Monday evening. The news was announced by Kabaş's lawyer, Uğur Poyraz.

In a post published on the social media platform X, Poyraz stated, "My client Sedef Kabaş called and said she was being detained. I am now heading to the Vatan police station."

Following Kabaş's detention, CHP Şanlıurfa MP Mahmut Tanal expressed his reaction on X.

Tanal stated that the detention order was "contrary to the principle of proportionality."

"Detaining journalist Sedef Kabaş in the middle of the night is not legal; it is arbitrary. Criminal procedure is not a tool for revenge and intimidation. This operation, carried out at midnight, is clearly contrary to Article 19 of the Constitution, Articles 90–91 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CMK), and the principle of proportionality. It is not a judicial necessity, but the instrumentalization of the law; a state of law summons and listens, it does not conduct night raids," he said.
