CHP's Özcan responds to Şamil Tayyar's 'It is not a CHP organization' remark: The Republic of Turkey is not an AKP organization
The debate sparked by the reading of a message from the imprisoned Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor and CHP presidential candidate Ekrem İmamoğlu at the meeting where the new president and authorized bodies of the Union of Municipalities of Turkey were determined continues to echo in politics.
CHP Deputy Chairman Serkan Özcan responded to AKP's Şamil Tayyar regarding the controversy over the reading of IMM Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu's message at the Union of Municipalities of Turkey meeting.
In response to Tayyar's words, "The Union of Municipalities is not a CHP organization," Özcan stated, "The Republic of Turkey is not an AK Party organization."
At the meeting, some AKP mayors reacted to the reading of İmamoğlu's message, leading to a scuffle in the hall. Following the discussions, Şamil Tayyar criticized the reading of İmamoğlu's message by the council in a post on his social media account.
Tayyar had used the following expressions on his social media account:
"The Union of Municipalities is an organization with the status of an association operating for the public benefit. Mayors elected from different parties are members of the union. In other words, it is not a CHP organization. It is not appropriate for the council to read the message of İmamoğlu, who currently has no public status, at the board. If you attempt to exploit every platform, you only harm yourselves. This path is not the right path."
Özcan reminded that Ekrem İmamoğlu was arrested while he was the President of the Union of Municipalities of Turkey, and noted that İmamoğlu is also the presidential candidate of the CHP, which is in power at the local level.
Özcan stated, "However, let us remind you of one truth: The Republic of Turkey is not an AK Party organization."
CHP's Özcan argued that state institutions are being worn down, saying, "I also request that you say a few words to the mentality that so bruises the state's institutions and sees itself as the owner of the state and the nation as a tenant."
