Claim that 'bread prices will rise in Istanbul': Could reach 15 liras

Cihan Kolivar, Chairman of the Bread Producers Employers' Union, stated that there could be a price hike for bread.

Pointing to the increase in input costs, Kolivar said, "Cost increases are putting pressure on producers. After the 15th of this month, the price of bread per kilogram in Istanbul could rise to 60 liras. Depending on the district, the price of bread could start at 12.5 liras and reach 15 liras."

Stating that rents for bakeries in districts like Şişli, Beşiktaş, and Kadıköy in Istanbul have reached up to 140 thousand liras, Kolivar asked, "In places like Arnavutköy and Sultangazi, rents can be 20-25 thousand liras. Such a difference in rent multiplies costs. Considering this, is it possible for bread to be sold at the same price everywhere in Istanbul?"

THERE ARE MORE THAN 500 UNLICENSED BAKERIES

Stating that there are 3,800 bakeries in Istanbul and more than 500 of them operate without a license, Kolivar conveyed that they are waiting for the issues of uninsured workers and unlicensed workplaces to be resolved.

Kolivar said that they have applied to the Council of State (Danıştay) for the cancellation of the decision requiring a positive opinion from the Ministry of Trade in determining bread and simit prices, claiming that it is against the law.
