Collapse at a potato storage facility in Niğde! Governor makes a statement: 'I don't know if the necessary surveys were conducted'

According to the information received, a collapse began to occur while excavation was being carried out underground during the construction of a natural potato storage facility in Çarıklı village, located in the central district of Niğde.

The workers, who noticed the situation and tried to exit from underground, were ejected outward by the pressure created by the collapse.

Upon notification, gendarmerie, fire department, medical, UMKE, and AFAD teams were dispatched to the region.

In the incident, 2 people lost their lives, and 4 injured people were transported to the hospital by ambulances.

GOVERNOR ARRIVED AT THE SCENE

Niğde Governor Cahit Çelik visited the injured who were taken under treatment at the Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University Training and Research Hospital. Çelik stated that 2 citizens lost their lives in the incident and 4 citizens were brought to the hospital as injured.

Reporting that 3 of the injured are in critical condition, Çelik said:

"According to the information we received, while an underground potato storage facility was being built, the air pressure created as a result of the collapse ejected the workers inside. As a result, 2 of our citizens died, and 3 of our citizens are seriously injured. Our healthcare workers are intervening at the hospital. I wish God's mercy upon the citizens who lost their lives and a speedy recovery to the injured."

JUDICIAL PROCESS WILL BE INITIATED

Çelik later arrived at the scene and received information from the authorities. In his statement to journalists there, Çelik said that underground potato storage facilities should be built according to the results of geological surveys.

Stating that there will be a judicial process from now on, Çelik said, "I do not know whether our friend here conducted the necessary surveys or not. It will emerge as a result of the judicial investigation."

"ARE THERE ANY DETENTIONS?" QUESTION

Upon a journalist's question, "Are there any detentions regarding the incident?", Çelik used the expression, "There are no detentions at the moment. Within the framework of the judicial investigation, the prosecutor's office may also carry out detention procedures. Actions will be taken according to the prosecutor's office procedures in the coming process regarding this."
