Communications Directorate issues statement regarding claims about Sweden's NATO membership decision

The statement issued by the Center for Combating Disinformation noted the following: 

Regarding the claims shared by some social media accounts concerning Sweden's NATO membership decision,

The claim that "The decision of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM), the President's approval, and publication in the Official Gazette were not considered sufficient, and the US Congress wanted to see the original wet-signed document" is not true.

The United States of America serves as the depositary country for more than 200 multilateral treaties, including the United Nations Charter, the International Atomic Energy Agency, and the North Atlantic Treaty (the founding treaty of NATO).

In its capacity as a depositary country, the US stores the "original" treaty texts and facilitates their proper signing. The depositary country also receives documents such as instruments of ratification related to the treaties.

Our President, Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has decided to publish the law accepted by the Grand National Assembly of Turkey regarding Sweden's accession to the North Atlantic Treaty and has signed the Presidential Decree regarding the protocol on Sweden's accession to NATO, thereby ratifying the relevant protocol. The text of the decision has been transmitted to the US, which is the depositary country, for the reasons clearly stated above. Do not give credence to baseless claims."
