Controversial advice from Şamil Tayyar following Erdoğan's 'local government' remarks! 'In the first stage, all...'

AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stated yesterday (May 14) at his party's parliamentary group meeting, "It has become inevitable to discuss, debate, and bring the issue of local governments and municipalities into a new order in all its dimensions. There is a need for a new status for municipal administration," signaling changes for local governments.

Following this move by Erdoğan, a striking post came from former AKP deputy Şamil Tayyar.

Suggesting the liquidation of district municipalities, Tayyar stated, "Our President Erdoğan said there is a need for a solid local government reform. He is absolutely right. Let me add, Turkey also needs a solid public reform. The cumbersome state structure that strengthens bureaucracy must be made more functional."

The full text of Tayyar's statement is as follows:

"Our President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said there is a need for a solid local government reform.

He is absolutely right.

Let me add, Turkey also needs a solid public reform.

The cumbersome state structure that strengthens bureaucracy must be made more functional.

If the terrorist organization is to be liquidated and a terror-free Turkey is to be built, it is also beneficial to put related reforms, which have been postponed due to security concerns, on the table.

I think we need to strengthen local governments, not the central administration, governorships, and district governorships.

In this context, I have radical proposals, but they cannot come to life in the current political climate.

Perhaps.

In the first stage, action could be taken by abolishing all district/town municipalities.

There would be a single elected political boss of the city, jurisdictional confusion and unnecessary competition would end, and waste would decrease.

It would also be in line with the spirit of the presidential government system.

Let it stay on the side, maybe it will be needed."
