Controversial Yeni Akit headline on Mahir Polat: Healthy outside, sick inside?

As the health condition and release request of İBB Deputy Secretary General Mahir Polat, who was detained and arrested during the March 19 operation targeting the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB), remain a hot topic, the pro-government newspaper Yeni Akit has featured the issue on its front page.

"HEALTHY OUTSIDE, SICK INSIDE"

In a report titled "Always the same tactic from coup plotters to thieves! Healthy outside, sick inside," Yeni Akit claimed that Polat did not suffer from any serious health issues before entering prison. The article, written by Ankara News Manager Muhammet Kutlu, characterized Polat's condition as a "cunning attempt to be released through illness."

Kutlu used the following expressions in his article:

"The leaders of a mentality that has lived in perfect health for years, engaging in every kind of illegal act from wagging fingers at legitimate elected governments to forming terrorist organizations and plundering the municipalities they have seized, suddenly fall bedridden when it comes time to be held accountable."

REFERRED TO FORENSIC MEDICINE

The report alleged that Mahir Polat did not use his blood pressure medication regularly, thereby worsening his health condition. Furthermore, it was claimed that Polat was "engaging in agitation" with his statement, "If something happens to me due to my blood pressure, I am responsible."

Yeni Akit also noted that Polat was sent back to prison following examinations at the Council of Forensic Medicine. The report included the views of some unnamed experts who stated, "Those who are perfectly healthy outside fall bedridden once they see the inside of a prison."

LAWYER ISSUED A CALL: HE IS AT VITAL RISK, HE MUST BE RELEASED

On the other hand, Mahir Polat's lawyer, Erkam Erdem, had drawn attention to the seriousness of his client's condition in a statement made in recent days. In a post shared on Sunday, April 6, Erdem stated that Polat's blood pressure had reached dangerous levels of 19-11, saying, 'His vital risk continues. He has undergone a heart angiography once and has been transferred to the hospital twice. His blood pressure is consistently high.'
