Cost of living crisis grows in Turkey: They are left homeless

Murat Çolak, who lives in the Çamlıca neighborhood of Eskişehir's Tepebaşı district, suffered a workplace accident at a construction site last year. Because he could not receive the necessary treatment, Çolak now has a 14 percent disability report and began to be unable to pay the rent for the house he lived in. 

Since Çolak paid the rent whenever he had money, his former landlord was understanding of the situation. With the landlord selling the house, the Çolak family began to have disagreements with the new owner. 

Çolak stated that despite telling the landlord he would recover and start working, he faced enforcement proceedings after the landlord had him sign a contract, and he expressed that he was forcibly evicted from the house 2 days ago. Neighbors have begun to support the family, who started living in front of the house with his wife and 11-year-old daughter. 

HE REQUESTED A HOME

35-year-old Murat Çolak, who said they started living on the street with their belongings after being evicted from their home, used the following sentences:

"I have a problem with my leg; I couldn't have surgery. I had a workplace accident last year. Our previous landlord had accepted my grievance. I didn't have any rent debt to him either. Later, he sold his house. I explained my grievance to the new landlord and told him I would work and pay. I asked them to allow me time until I got back on my feet. They made us sign a contract. Later, they took us to enforcement, and an eviction order came 1 and a half months later. Even though I told them about my grievance, they insisted that I vacate the house. When they came last, they entered with a locksmith and forcibly evicted us. We have been in this state for 2 days. We are staying outside; neighbors are helping. Before this, my neighbors were helping because I had no income. We sleep and wake up on the sofa here. Our neighbors bring our food and drink. We can't do anything ourselves. Our neighbors bring everything from our tea to our breakfast. We request that the authorities help us and provide us with a home. It would be good if they could help at least until I have surgery. I don't have any insurance or income. Even though I am sick, I am looking for work. I have risked everything. I don't want my wife and child to stay outside."
