Discussions regarding whether a tsunami will occur in Istanbul following the expected major earthquake in the Marmara region have resurfaced. Providing an assessment on the subject, Prof. Dr. Osman Bektaş shared his views on the possibility of a "major Istanbul tsunami" in a post on his social media account.

Stating that he does not expect a major tsunami in Istanbul, Bektaş used the phrase, "Most likely, no."

Most likely, no.

Why?

Earthquakes in the Marmara region have been occurring in pieces for years rather than as a single giant rupture. 

The M5+ earthquakes extending from the west to Istanbul and the M6+ earthquakes in the surrounding area during the 20th and 21st centuries may be a sign of this."
