Criminal complaint filed against CHP Chairman Özgür Özel
Journalist Nuray Başaran Demir has filed a criminal complaint against CHP Chairman Özgür Özel, alleging that she was targeted after her voice and image were projected at a rally in İzmir.
In the complaint petition submitted to the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, Demir argued that she has been receiving threats for a long time due to her journalistic activities and that the fire that broke out at the residential complex where she lives on April 25 was related to these threats.
Stating that they noticed a camera near their home had been removed after the incident, Demir requested an investigation to identify the suspects, citing the suspicion that the fire might have been an act of arson.
Journalist Demir alleged that she has been subjected to various forms of threats for a long time due to her reports and commentary regarding the 38th CHP Ordinary Congress, and that Özel has made her a target at rallies.
Nuray Başaran Demir stated the following:
"At the CHP rally held in İzmir on May 19, they projected the 'Taksim Meydanı' program on TGRT, in which I and other guests participated, onto the main screen, played my speech from this program to those attending the rally, and made me a target.
He declared me a liar and a slanderer. I am submitting a one-page screenshot of this as evidence to the file. Since then, the threats against me have increased even further. Due to my journalistic activities, for the first time in Turkish history, a journalist is being targeted by the chairman of a political party by having their name and image displayed."
Stating that she holds a permanent press card and is considered a public official under the Press Law, Demir declared that she is a complainant and plaintiff against Özel for these reasons.
