Critical date for animal rights: Constitutional Court decision expected

The Constitutional Court will deliberate on the request for the annulment and stay of execution of the amendments made to the Animal Protection Law No. 7527, which includes regulations concerning stray animals, on May 7. This law was published in the Official Gazette and entered into force on August 2.

The Republican People's Party (CHP) filed an application with the Constitutional Court on August 15 for the annulment of 16 out of the 17 articles of the law. In a statement made after the application, CHP Group Deputy Chairman Gökhan Günaydın stated that the articles requested for annulment are contrary to animal rights, public interest, and the right to life.

The Constitutional Court will evaluate this application during its General Assembly meeting on May 7 to examine it on its merits. At the meeting, a decision will be made on whether to accept the application.
