Criticism of the AKP from Erdoğan's former speechwriter: 'The most important thing is this...'
Aydın Ünal, a columnist for the pro-government newspaper Yeni Şafak and a former speechwriter for President Erdoğan, assessed the situation, stating, "The AK Party was a melting pot, but it has begun to lose this transformative power. Erdoğan often carried the party on his shoulders alone and won votes single-handedly. With the Presidential Government System, this distinction has become even clearer. The party has become a distant observer of developments."
AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's former speechwriter, Aydın Ünal, leveled criticisms at his former party in his column in Yeni Şafak.
Ünal, who also served as an AKP member of parliament for a period, wrote that the party has lost its strength in certain areas following the transition to the Presidential Government System.
Stating that the AKP was a "melting pot" capable of incorporating all of Turkey's colors and transforming them or aligning them with its own line, Ünal said, "As the gap between the government and the party widened, the AK Party began to lose this transformative power."
"IT HAS BEGUN TO LOSE ITS TRANSFORMATIVE POWER"
Ünal wrote the following:
"The AK Party was a 'melting pot.' It could incorporate all of Turkey's colors, transform them, or make them compatible with its own line. As the gap between the government and the party widened, the AK Party began to lose this transformative power. Those who arrived brought their own language and style, and a serious problem of 'cohesion' began to emerge. This cohesion problem within the party reflected more heavily on the government, the Külliye staff, or the Council of Ministers.
"THE DISTINCTION HAS BECOME EVEN CLEARER"
"The most important thing is this: Erdoğan's charismatic leadership personality had already been overshadowing the party from the very beginning. Undoubtedly, the organization cannot be underestimated, but Erdoğan often carried the party on his shoulders alone and won votes single-handedly. With the Presidential Government System, this distinction has become even clearer. The party has become a distant observer of developments. However, this distance has also deprived the government of an important source for policy production and implementation."
