CTP MP responds to Bahçeli's license plate remarks regarding the TRNC
CTP MP Doğuş Derya has responded to MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli, who refused to recognize the presidential elections in the TRNC and argued that the TRNC should be annexed by Turkey, stating, "After 81 Düzce, it has now become a matter of life and death for the TRNC to be 82."
The presidential elections in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) remain on the agenda. Ersin Tatar, supported by the People's Alliance, lost the election. The new president of the TRNC is Tufan Erhürman, Chairman of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP). Erhürman received 62.8 percent of the votes.
Following the election results in the TRNC, MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli announced that he did not recognize the results. AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, contrary to Bahçeli, congratulated Erhürman.
BAHÇELİ ASSIGNS LICENSE PLATE TO TRNC
In his party's group meeting yesterday, Bahçeli escalated his rhetoric and argued that the TRNC should be annexed by Turkey. In his statement, the MHP leader used the expression, "After 81 Düzce, it has now become a matter of life and death for the TRNC to be 82."
"A STATEMENT WITH NO LEGAL BASIS, WE ARE WATCHING WITH A SMILE"
A response to Bahçeli's statements came from CTP MP Doğuş Derya. Speaking on Sözcü TV, Derya stated the following:
"We are watching these types of statements with a smile. Devlet Bahçeli makes certain moves aimed at politics and domestic policy, and this is not the first time this has happened. As people who follow Turkey closely, we have witnessed before that he has made many statements on other issues from time to time that we cannot take very seriously politically and that have no legal basis. I accept this statement as one of them. Frankly, there is nothing above the will of the people. As people who believe in democracy and the republic, which is a regime of the people, we went to the polls on Sunday knowing that the only place where the people express themselves through democratic representation channels is first the ballot box, then the parliament, and then the actions of the government, and the people already had their say by showing favor to Mr. Erhürman at a rate of 63% and giving him this duty, indicating how they want to be governed."
