A curfew has been imposed in several states in Nigeria due to protests against the rising cost of living following the removal of fuel subsidies.
Due to the protests that began yesterday in the country turning violent in some areas, a curfew has been declared in the states of Gombe, Jigawa, Kano, Niger, and Yobe.
Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, in a written statement, pointed out that the protests in the state had turned violent, stating, "After careful consideration, we have decided that a curfew must be imposed to prevent the looting and destruction of businesses and the killing of innocent citizens."
Curfews were also declared in Gombe, Jigawa, Niger, and Yobe states due to the looting of businesses and clashes between protesters and security forces.
Civil society organizations are planning to hold 10 days of nationwide protests starting August 1 following the removal of the fuel subsidy.
FUEL SUBSIDY REMOVED LAST YEAR
Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu removed the subsidy on petroleum products on May 29, 2023.
Following the decision, fuel prices in the country rose.
The price of fuel, which was sold at 185 naira ($0.24) per liter, increased to 620 naira ($0.82).
