Customs duty hits Volvo too: Will not be sold in Turkey

Swedish global giant Volvo has made a new decision regarding its sedan models sold in Turkey. Alican Emiroğlu, General Manager of Volvo Car Turkey, shared his assessments regarding the decision. Speaking to Habertürk, Emiroğlu provided detailed information about Volvo's current models and its electrification process.

Emphasizing that Volvo Car Turkey broke an all-time record in 2023 by reaching a sales figure of 11 thousand 646 units, Alican Emiroğlu said, "I have had the opportunity to look at Turkey from abroad for the last 6 years, and it was very proud to watch the success Turkey has achieved during this period from abroad. I wholeheartedly congratulate my teammates who achieved this success."

'WE WILL NOT BRING SEDAN MODELS STARTING FROM THE NEW YEAR'

Explaining that the gasoline engine option is no longer offered in the brand's compact SUV model XC40 and that the car continues its journey only as an electric vehicle under the name EX40, Emiroğlu stated, "Since our sedan models are produced in China, we will no longer bring these models starting from the new year. The recent customs duties had an impact on our decision to take this step. We do not plan to sell a sedan car in Turkey until electric sedan models arrive."

The 40 percent additional tax previously imposed on Chinese-origin electric cars had become applicable to all fuel types of automobiles imported from China as of July 2024.

CUSTOMS DUTY INCREASED FROM 18 PERCENT TO 30 PERCENT

Recently, the fixed tax rates for goods brought from abroad were changed in the decision regarding the implementation of certain articles of Customs Law No. 4458. According to the decision published in the Official Gazette dated August 6, the customs duty on products coming from European Union (EU) countries with a value not exceeding 30 Euros (1099 TL) was increased from 18 percent to 30 percent.

WILL BE APPLIED STARTING FROM AUGUST 21

At the same time, it was decided that the same tariff would be applied to medicine-type products not exceeding 1500 Euros. If these products come from countries other than the EU, a 60 percent tax will be collected per purchase.

According to the decision published with the signature of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the increased tax rates will begin to be applied as of August 21.
