Death toll from counterfeit alcohol in Istanbul rises to 7
As the number of deaths from counterfeit alcohol in Istanbul rises to 7, 8 people who were poisoned continue to receive treatment in hospitals. Istanbul police, conducting inspections on entertainment venues and working to apprehend those responsible for the deaths caused by counterfeit alcohol, have detained 13 suspects.
In Istanbul, 15 people were taken to hospitals over the past 3 days in Şişli, Beyoğlu, Fatih, Kağıthane, Esenyurt, and Ümraniye on suspicion of being poisoned by counterfeit alcohol.
While 3 more of those hospitalized have lost their lives, the death toll has risen to 7. The 8 people who were hospitalized continue to receive treatment.
Following the deaths from counterfeit alcohol, police teams are continuing their inspections without slowing down, targeting those who disregard human life. As part of the work carried out regarding the incidents, an operation was conducted to apprehend 13 suspects who supplied the counterfeit alcohol to the poisoned citizens and caused their poisoning.
13 suspects were apprehended in operations carried out in the Şişli, Beyoğlu, and Fatih districts.
During searches conducted at the suspects' workplaces and in their vehicles, 410 liters of ethyl-methyl alcohol, 165 bottles of counterfeit alcohol, 6 units of anise, and substances used in the production of illicit alcohol were seized. It was learned that legal proceedings have been initiated against the 13 detained suspects.
