Death toll rises to 13 in Filo Jet sinking off Kyrenia; search continues for 15 people
Another body has been recovered from the wreckage of the Filo Jet, which sank while traveling from the TRNC to Mersin. Search efforts are ongoing for 15 missing individuals.
In the search and rescue operations for the passenger ship named Filo Jet , which sank while traveling from the city of Kyrenia in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus to the Port of Taşucu in Mersin, another body has been recovered. With this latest development, the number of people who lost their lives in the accident has risen to 13.
Authorities reported that efforts are continuing to find the 15 people missing from the ship. Search operations conducted off the coast of Kyrenia are proceeding meticulously due to sea conditions and the depth at which the wreckage is located.
TRNC Prime Minister Ünal Üstel had previously announced that the identification process for the two female bodies recovered from the wreckage had been completed. Üstel announced that as a result of the work carried out by the police, the bodies were determined to belong to Şerife Özdemir and Nazmiye Özbolat, and that their families had been informed accordingly.
The Ministry of National Defense also shared information regarding the search and rescue efforts. In a statement made on the ministry's social media account, it was stated, "Search and rescue operations for the ship that capsized off the coast of Kyrenia are being continued by the TCG Işın rescue and towing ship and the TCG Alemdar rescue ship belonging to our Naval Forces."
The high-speed passenger ship Filo Jet, which operates between the Port of Kyrenia and the Port of Taşucu, began taking on water from its bow shortly after departing from Kyrenia on Sunday, August 30. It was announced that the wreckage of the ship, which sank while attempting to return to port, was located at a depth of 554 meters off the coast of Kyrenia.
