The long-standing yellow taxi issue in Istanbul was brought to the agenda at the UKOME meeting.

Two officials speaking to Bloomberg yesterday had announced that the AKP was working on a law that would increase the number of taxis in the city by 73 percent, bringing the total to approximately 32,000. The report noted that the goal was to reach a ratio of one taxi for every 500 people.

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu had pointed to today regarding the taxi issue, stating, "We are taking an important step in solving the taxi problem in Istanbul. As a result of the work we have carried out with all stakeholders, we are close to both increasing the number of taxis and implementing a new taxi system."

DECISION REACHED AT UKOME MEETING

It was noted at the meeting that there are currently 19,198 yellow taxis in the city, and a total of 20,311 taxis including turquoise and accessible taxis, while a proposal for the supply of 2,500 new taxis was submitted for a vote.

It was noted that the taxis will be fully digital, equipped with security partitions, and will not have roof lights, and there will be no passenger commission or additional fees.

The proposal for the new taxi supply passed the commission, and thus 2,500 new taxis will be included in the system.
