Decision regarding Deniz Yolçu, who climbed onto a TOMA during Özgür Özel's İzmir rally

Following the absolute nullity decision, Deniz Yolçu, who was detained and arrested during the events that took place at the rally organized by CHP Chairman Özgür Özel in İzmir on May 26, has been released under judicial control measures as part of the ongoing investigation.

Yolçu's lawyer, Musa Hanci, announced that his client was released with judicial control measures applied.

In a statement made by lawyer Musa Hanci:

“On May 26, 2026, our client Deniz Yolçu, who came to the area to attend the rally held by Özgür Özel in İzmir, climbed onto a TOMA vehicle belonging to the security forces to protest the disproportionate intervention against citizens.

Following this action, our client was subjected to disproportionate force and ill-treatment by law enforcement officers; he was detained after his nose was broken and he was beaten. After a one-day detention period, our client was arrested on May 27, 2026, and sent to prison.

Within the scope of the ongoing investigation, a decision of non-prosecution was issued on June 16, 2026, regarding the charge of 'Resisting to Prevent Duty' directed at our client, and his release was ordered for this offense.

However, his detention continued due to the investigation conducted under the charge of 'Damaging Public Property.'

Upon the payment of the alleged material damage to the TOMA vehicle by his family on June 19, 2026, a release decision was issued for our client Deniz Yolçu for this crime as well, with judicial control conditions including a signature requirement and a travel ban, and he has been released.

As of now, the investigation regarding the crime of 'Damaging Public Property' is ongoing, and according to information obtained from the prosecutor's office, it has been reported that the indictment will be prepared soon.

We will continue to meticulously follow the legal process, including the disproportionate violence, torture, and unfair detention process that our client was subjected to.”
