Decision reached regarding the knife-wielding attacker at Fatih Mosque

Ömer Salgın, who injured Imam Galip Usta and Bilal Erdem at Fatih Mosque yesterday evening, was taken to the Istanbul Courthouse in Çağlayan following police processing.

ATTACKER ARRESTED

Following his statement at the prosecutor's office, Ömer Salgın was referred to the Duty Magistrate Judge with a request for his arrest on charges of "Attempted Intentional Homicide." Ömer Salgın was arrested.

It was determined that Ömer Salgın had a prior record for "intentional injury" and held a registered shotgun license valid until 2028.

The suspect's father, Hüseyin S., also came from Bursa to the Istanbul Public Security Branch for questioning. In his statement, Hüseyin S. noted that his son married in 2012 and divorced in 2019, and that he experienced problems after a subsequent marriage ended in divorce. He explained that in recent months, his son had turned to religious matters due to setbacks in his business.

According to IHA, it was learned that the suspect traveled alone from Bursa to Fatih Mosque in his own vehicle. It was also learned that Ömer Salgın had assaulted a chemist one day prior.

ATTACKER'S STATEMENT REVEALED

In his statement to the prosecutor, Ömer Salgın defended himself by saying, "I am someone who prays five times a day. I learned that my partner was with my ex-wife. I did not receive the return for the good deeds I did in life. For this reason, I was very overwhelmed. On the date of the incident, I started shouting in the mosque while reciting the takbir. I do not remember what happened afterward.

Because imams are people who represent goodness, and because I was very overwhelmed and felt there was an inconsistency between what I read and the information in mosque sermons, I may have reflected my anger onto the imam.

No person or organization directed me in this action. It developed as a momentary reflex."
