Decrease in household size in Turkey!

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) has published the average household size according to the results of the Address Based Population Registration System (ADNKS). Accordingly, the province with the highest average household size in Turkey in 2023 was Şırnak, with 4.86 people. Şırnak was followed by Şanlıurfa with 4.67 people and Batman with 4.61 people. 

The provinces with the lowest average household size were Çanakkale with 2.54 people. This province was followed by Giresun with 2.60 people and Balıkesir with 2.61 people.

INCREASE IN LIVING ALONE 

According to ADNKS results, the proportion of one-person households, consisting of individuals living alone, which was 14.4% in 2015, rose to 19.7% in 2023.

DECREASE IN NUCLEAR FAMILIES

An increase was observed in the proportion of households consisting of more than one person that do not contain a nuclear family; in other words, households that do not include individuals with a spouse, mother-child, or father-child relationship. The proportion of such households rose from 2.2% in 2015 to 3.3% in 2023.

PROVINCE WITH THE HIGHEST RATE OF LIVING ALONE: GÜMÜŞHANE 

When household types were examined by province, it was seen that the province with the highest proportion of one-person households in 2023 was Gümüşhane, with 30.4%. Gümüşhane was followed by Tunceli with 29.2% and Giresun with 29%. On the other hand, the province with the lowest proportion of one-person households was Batman, with 11.1%. This province was followed by Van with 11.8% and Diyarbakır with 11.9%.
