Defamation and slander lawsuit against İzzet Özgenç

An indictment has been prepared against Prof. Dr. İzzet Özgenç, a former legal advisor to AKP Chairman and  President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, on charges of "defamation" and "slander" due to his remarks regarding members of the Court of Cassation. 

Speaking about the indictment prepared against him, Özgenç stated that his testimony was not taken during the investigation process, saying, "I was not given the opportunity to explain my position" he said.

According to the indictment, the investigation was launched following a post by Özgenç on his social media account and website titled, "Information note prepared to be submitted to the President."

The prosecutor's office stated that the complaint included charges of "Targeting public officials involved in the fight against terrorism," "Slander," "Defamation," "Attempting to influence a fair trial," and "Attempting to influence those performing judicial duties," but concluded that there was sufficient suspicion only for the charges of "defamation" and "slander."

It was noted that the indictment also includes Özgenç's legal assessments regarding the imprisoned Can Atalay.

"I WAS NOT ASKED FOR MY SIDE DURING THE INVESTIGATION PROCESS"

Following the preparation of the indictment, Özgenç made a statement on his social media account, reacting to the investigation process.

Özgenç argued that he was not heard during the investigation phase, stating, "I was not given the opportunity to explain my position during the investigation process regarding this case."
