'DEM' brand rakı being recalled from the market

The Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (HEDEP) changed its short name, which was not accepted by the Court of Cassation, to DEM Party

BEING RECALLED FROM THE MARKET

However, this name change led to an interesting similarity. According to a post by journalist Deniz Zeyrek, Mey İçki had to recall its DEM-branded rakı, which it had launched shortly before HEDEP's name change, due to this similarity.

WHAT HAD HAPPENED?

Due to the closure case pending at the Constitutional Court, the HDP had participated in the general elections held in May under the Green Left Party (Yeşil Sol Parti). At the congress held after the elections, it was decided that the party's new name would be the Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party and its abbreviation would be HEDEP. However, the Court of Cassation did not accept the HEDEP abbreviation on the grounds that it resembled HADEP, the short name of the previously closed People's Democracy Party.

Following this, HEDEP held a charter congress over the weekend to change the abbreviation, this time changing the party's name to DEM Party.
