DEM Party's Beştaş warns court over Demirtaş ruling: 'Return to the rule of law': 'The cover-up can no longer be hidden'

A prison sentence of one year and three months to seven years has been requested for former HDP co-chair Selahattin Demirtaş on charges of 'insulting the president' in a chain of events. This decision regarding Demirtaş, who has been imprisoned in Edirne for years and was expected to be released, has drawn backlash.

Many politicians have made statements regarding the decision. DEM Party Erzurum MP Meral Danış Beştaş also used the following expressions regarding the development:

The years-long detention of Selahattin Demirtaş and the files kept pending in different provinces are first backed up and then put into effect to prevent his freedom.

The cover-up has become impossible to hide; the principle of legal certainty has been destroyed.

The effect of "punishment through uncertainty," which the ECHR has emphasized, has been more than realized in Demirtaş's detention, which has exceeded 9 years. The case reopened today and the new demand for punishment show a desire to consciously set a barrier before his freedom.

The timing of these files is not independent of political processes, and this situation is a clear indicator of the instrumentalization of the law. If cases have turned into temporal barriers, the problem is not just in a single file, but in the entire legal order.

Enough is enough, hasn't 9 years of hostage-taking been enough?

You can no longer prevent Selahattin Demirtaş's freedom with political maneuvers. Return to the rule of law…
