DEM Party calls on AKP regarding the process: 'They must act quickly'
Making statements regarding the second opening process, referred to as a Turkey without terrorism, DEM Party Group Deputy Chairperson Gülistan Kılıç Koçyiğit stated that the AKP must act quickly, adding, "The government needs to realize by now that we are not facing an issue that can be spread over days and months. We must underline that it is not possible for the process to proceed in its current state, lacking a legal framework and guarantees."
DEM Party Group Deputy Chairperson Gülistan Kılıç Koçyiğit held a press conference at the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM). Making statements regarding the agenda, Koçyiğit issued a call to the government concerning the second opening process.
Koçyiğit emphasized that for 'democratic integration' to be realized, the parliament must take an active role, political parties must increase their responsibilities, and a legal order encompassing all segments of society must be constructed.
Pointing out that strengthening democratic politics, removing obstacles to freedom of expression and organization, and guaranteeing these rights are fundamental elements for the process to progress healthily, Koçyiğit assessed, "The absence of democratic law lies at the source of many of the crises we are experiencing today."
Stating that the opportunity that has emerged should not be squandered, Koçyiğit continued her statement with the following words:
"The government must act quickly. The government needs to realize by now that we are not facing an issue that can be spread over days and months. We must underline that it is not possible for the process to proceed in its current state, lacking a legal framework and guarantees. Let us underline that, as the Commission Report also puts forward, the process requires peace laws to be brought to Parliament and enacted quickly. We must state that it is not possible to provide the conditions for this process to advance without enacting legislation that will facilitate the disarmament process and ensure the participation of those who lay down arms in political and social life."
