DEM Party co-mayors detained in Mersin: First reaction from CHP
This morning, Akdeniz Municipality Co-Mayors Hoşyar Sarıyıldız and Nuriye Arslan were detained in Mersin. The CHP has reacted to this decision.
Under the coordination of the Mersin Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, teams from the Provincial Security Directorate detained Akdeniz Mayor Hoşyar Sarıyıldız, Deputy Mayor and Council Member Nuriye Arslan, and DEM Party municipal council members Özgür Çağlar, Neslihan Oruç, Yakup Danış, and Hikmet Bakırhan as part of an investigation launched on charges of "making propaganda for a terrorist organization," "membership in an armed terrorist organization," "violation of the Law on the Prevention of the Financing of Terrorism," and "opposition to the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations No. 2911."
FIRST REACTION FROM CHP AFTER DETENTIONS
Following the detentions, while allegations were raised that a trustee would be appointed to the Akdeniz Municipality, the CHP reacted to the operation.
CHP Deputy Chairman Burhanettin Bulut stated on his social media account, "Appointing a trustee to the Akdeniz Municipality is a blow to democracy and the will of the people. We reject the government's seizure of municipalities it could not win at the ballot box, and we reject the tyranny of trustees."
