Ağrı Municipality Co-Mayor Hazal Aras announced that Co-Mayor Memet Akkuş has passed away. Akkuş's funeral will be held on September 6.
Ağrı Municipality Co-Mayor Memet Akkuş has passed away. The news was announced by Ağrı Municipality Co-Mayor Hazal Aras in a statement on her social media account.
In her statement, Aras said, “We are experiencing the deep pain of losing our Municipal Co-Mayor Memet Akkuş. His funeral will be held on Sunday, September 6, following the noon prayer. We wish patience and offer our condolences to his family, loved ones, and the people of Ağrı.”

In a statement released by the DEM Party, it was said, “We have learned with deep sadness that our Ağrı Municipal Co-Mayor Mehmet Akkuş has passed away. We wish him mercy and offer our condolences to his family, loved ones, and our people.”
WHO IS MEMET AKKUŞ?
Born in Ağrı in 1969, Memet Akkuş migrated to Istanbul after being released from prison in 1992. Akkuş, who served in the administration of DEHAP in Istanbul, held the positions of HDP Provincial Administrator and Provincial Chair in Ağrı in 2015.
Akkuş, who was the HDP's candidate for Ağrı Municipal Co-Mayor in the 2019 local elections, was nominated as the DEM Party's candidate for Ağrı Municipal Co-Mayor in the 2024 local elections. Following the March 31 elections, he began his term as the Co-Mayor of Ağrı. Akkuş was married and a father of 5 children.
