DEM Party reacts to prison sentence given to Ahmet Özer: 'A mindset that criminalizes alliances'

DEM Party Co-Chair Tuncer Bakırhan stated, "The prison sentence given to Esenyurt Mayor Ahmet Özer is a decision that does not fit with law or conscience.

This sentence given to Ahmet Özer, who was elected with the votes of hundreds of thousands of citizens, is a sentence given to the will of the people.

I condemn this decision, which places a mortgage on the will of the people. This mindset, which criminalizes political and social alliances formed during elections, deals the greatest blow to social peace."

DEM Party Co-Chair Tuncer Bakırhan wrote the following on his social media account regarding the 6-year, 3-month prison sentence given to Esenyurt Mayor Ahmet Özer:

"The prison sentence given to Esenyurt Mayor Ahmet Özer is a decision that does not fit with law or conscience. This sentence given to Ahmet Özer, who was elected with the votes of hundreds of thousands of citizens, is a sentence given to the will of the people. I condemn this decision, which places a mortgage on the will of the people.

This mindset, which criminalizes political and social alliances formed during elections, deals the greatest blow to social peace. The mind that is currently preoccupied with how to further restrict the rights of Kurds in Syria is the same mind as those who begrudge Kurds being in administration in Esenyurt. This attitude toward elected officials, which blocks the channels of democratic politics, is incompatible with a mindset of resolution. This is not a beneficial mindset; this mindset is causing great harm to the country. We will continue to defend democratic politics and stand by the will of the people."
