DEM Party responds to AKP on the 'right to hope': 'We are saying it openly...'
The response from the DEM Party camp to AKP member Özlem Zengin's statement that "the Imralı delegation did not come with a demand for the right to hope" was swift.
DEM Party Spokesperson Ayşegül Doğan held a press conference at her party's headquarters.
AKP Group Deputy Chair Özlem Zengin had previously stated regarding the "right to hope" brought up for terrorist leader Abdullah Öcalan, "The Imralı delegation did not come with a demand for the right to hope."
Doğan said the following regarding Zengin's remarks:
"I would say let's not talk based on speculation. Therefore, we do not want to talk based on speculation either. We have work regarding Turkey's needs. Our Legal Commission is working, our Parliamentary Commission is working, our Commission Coordination is working, and our Central Executive Board is working.
Our co-chair clearly expressed what we want, what the DEM Party's demands are, and what Turkey's needs are at the Parliamentary Group Meeting.
However, it is impossible for Ms. Özlem not to have heard about the 'right to hope' issue, because regarding the right to hope, Mr. Bahçeli, in his first call to Mr. Öcalan, said in Parliament, 'Let him clearly dissolve his organization, then come, and if necessary, the right to hope can be applied under the roof of Parliament.'
Look, more than a year has passed since then, hasn't it? We are not saying this behind closed doors; we are saying it openly. If Ms. Özlem needs to hear it, let us say it to her once again from here. Of course, the right to hope should be discussed. Naturally, everything that is necessary should be discussed and done properly."
WHAT DID ÖZLEM ZENGİN SAY?
AKP member Özlem Zengin had made statements regarding the new resolution process at the Anatolian Conversations program held at the Turkish Press Federation.
Zengin said the following regarding the right to hope and a general amnesty:
"I did not hear such a demand in the meetings I attended. On the contrary, it was stated repeatedly that Imralı has no demands, including being released. This has already been shared with the public. The DEM delegation that visited us, which is their highest-level body, stated in no uncertain terms that they had no demands, including being released."
