Deniz Eliş, kidnapped for ransom in Bosnia and Herzegovina, brought back to Turkey
Deniz Eliş, who set out from Gaziantep to seek asylum in Italy, was kidnapped in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The group that kidnapped him demanded 1,000 euros from Eliş's family, followed by a demand for 10,000 euros. It was learned that the money sent by the family was deposited into a foreign account at a Turkish bank. However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Eliş had been reached and brought back to Turkey.
Eliş, who traveled from Gaziantep to Bosnia and Herzegovina with the intention of seeking asylum in Italy, had been kidnapped by an unidentified group. It was stated that Eliş was held by a group alleged to be Afghan, and that they had demanded 1,000 euros from his family, followed by a demand for an additional 10,000 euros after that money was sent.
Several voice recordings, allegedly belonging to Eliş, had been sent to his family. It was revealed that the bank account to which Eliş's family sent the 1,000 euros belonged to a Turkish bank, and that the account holder was a foreign national named Hedayetullah Quazızada.
CHP MP and member of the TBMM Interior Affairs Commission Melih Meriç had met with Eliş's family. Following his meeting with the family, who had not heard from their son Deniz Eliş, Melih Meriç had issued a call to the authorities.
MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS REACHED DENIZ ELIŞ
The day before yesterday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Deniz Eliş had been reached, that his transfer to Turkey's Embassy in Zagreb was being facilitated, and that the legal process regarding the matter was being followed by Turkey's Embassy in Zagreb, Embassy in Sarajevo, and Consulate General in Banja Luka.
It was learned that Deniz Eliş has been brought to Turkey. Eliş, who arrived at Gaziantep Airport on a scheduled flight from Istanbul, was met by his family, relatives, and CHP Gaziantep MP Melih Meriç. In a statement to reporters, Eliş said he was very happy to be reunited with his family and loved ones, stating, "I am very happy right now. May God not let anyone experience this. I thank everyone very much."
MP Meriç expressed his happiness that Eliş had reunited with his family, saying, "I would like to thank our ambassador, our consulate general, and the entire Ministry of Foreign Affairs for their interest, on behalf of my family and my city."
