Comedian Deniz Göktaş's lawyer, Mehmet Sinan Aslan, made statements regarding his client's detention and trial process.
Appearing on journalist Fatih Altaylı's program, Aslan explained the process leading to Göktaş's release after 88 days of detention and the behind-the-scenes details of the meeting that reportedly took place with Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu.
Aslan argued that allowing a detained person who is still a suspect to meet with third parties is not standard practice. Stating that such contacts are problematic both in terms of security and the protection of the suspect, Aslan said, "Only lawyers are allowed to visit. You have to beg and plead just to see your own lawyer."
I have been practicing this profession for 25 years. I have truly never seen a detained suspect being allowed to meet with a third party.
Stating that he had been called repeatedly by Kılıçdaroğlu's advisor since the morning, Aslan said he blocked the number due to these calls. Aslan alleged that when they arrived at the courthouse, Kılıçdaroğlu was kept inside from 8:00 AM onwards, "despite having no official duty or authority."
Aslan stated that he conveyed the situation to Deniz Göktaş while they were waiting for the prosecutor, and that Göktaş was not keen on the meeting request. Aslan recounted the conversation at that moment with the words: "I said to Deniz, 'Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu is here. Maybe you want to meet him.' He said, 'No, never, I don't want anyone to use me.'"
Aslan also shared the messages conveyed to him during his meeting with Göktaş in prison. Stating that Göktaş said, "They cannot steal our joy," Aslan noted that his client told him he was made to meet with Kılıçdaroğlu before the hearing.
According to lawyer Aslan's claim, Göktaş told him that during this meeting, he said to Kılıçdaroğlu, "Let go of the CHP." Aslan also said that after a denial came from the CHP side regarding the meeting, he met with Göktaş again that same night and that his client confirmed his allegations.
Aslan also alleged that police officers in the courthouse corridors said to Göktaş, "You shouldn't have been so harsh and rude to someone older than you." According to the lawyer's account, Göktaş replied to this by saying, "They forced me to meet him, what do you mean?"
