Detentions in Turkish politics spark debate: Striking post from Erkan Baş

Detention decisions continue to occupy the agenda in Turkish politics. While CHP Youth Branch President Cem Aydın was taken into custody in the morning, it was reported that an investigation was launched into Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu for criticizing the situation. In the evening, Zafer Party Chairman Ümit Özdağ was detained at a restaurant where he was present, citing a speech he made in Mersin.

Detentions in Turkish politics spark debate: Striking post from Erkan Baş

The events have caused widespread repercussions in public opinion and among political parties. Workers' Party of Turkey (TİP) Chairman and Member of Parliament Erkan Baş reacted to the developments and made a statement on his social media account. Baş stated that the detention decisions and the investigations launched mean that "the judiciary is being used as a tool for the political power's operations to design the opposition." Emphasizing that this situation is unacceptable, Baş criticized the intervention in political struggle through the judiciary.

In his statement, Baş drew attention to economic problems and social injustices, expressing that "an early election is now an inevitable necessity to get rid of this government." He also claimed that the Presidency displays an intolerant attitude toward criticism in political debates, stating that the crime of "insulting the President" has been turned into a tool to silence political opponents.

The fact that the detention and investigation decisions were made on the same day caused debates in different segments. While opposition parties expressed the view that such practices harm the ground of democratic politics, no statement has been made by the government side regarding the issue yet.

Here is that statement from Erkan Baş:

CHP Youth Branch President Cem Aydın was detained in the morning. An investigation was launched into Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu for criticizing this. Finally, in the evening, Zafer Party Chairman Ümit Özdağ was detained.

It is no coincidence that all three instructions were given by the same authority.

It is unacceptable for the judiciary to become a cover for Erdoğan's operation to design the opposition.

The government's attempts to bring those it cannot persuade through politics into line with the stick of the judiciary are illegitimate.

The unlawful, arbitrary, and politically motivated instructions to design politics must be ended immediately.

The political power is responsible for poverty, unemployment, and all kinds of injustice. It is an inevitable necessity to loudly call for an early election to get rid of this government immediately.

The AKP Chairman wants to prevent even the expression of words against him by relying on the article regulating the crime of Insulting the President.

Are you that afraid of political struggle, Erdoğan!

Let all laws protect you with the freak regime you have established, throw your rivals in jail...

If you have any courage, leave your judicial toy and come to the market, come among the people.

See what kind of anger is accumulating against the order of plunder you have established.

We will not engage in politics within the boundaries you have drawn.

This country will definitely get rid of both you and this dirty regime that bears your name.
