Devlet Bahçeli criticizes prison sentence for Ahmet Özer: 'It has no conscience-based justification'

Bahçeli made the following statement on social media:

The goal of a "Terror-Free Turkey" is the most effective breakthrough and objective of the past century.

Peace, tranquility, stability, and security are both the right and the indisputable desire and pursuit of the Turkish nation.

In this context, we must not forget that everyone and all of us are obligated to act and serve accordingly.

The sentencing of Esenyurt Mayor Prof. Dr. Ahmet Özer to 6 years and 3 months in prison for the crime of "membership in an armed terrorist organization" not only contradicts universal legal principles but also stands in direct opposition to the goal and effort of a "Terror-Free Turkey." This decision has no justification in the collective conscience and no reasonable basis.

The aforementioned decision by the Istanbul 14th High Criminal Court is problematic and stands in contradiction and conflict with the principles of justice and fairness. For this reason, it is my sincere wish and hope that the court decision in question will be corrected during the appeal stages and that justice will truly be served.

It is our acute expectation that the Turkish legal system, free from prejudices, will provide judicial and moral support to the sentiment of national unity and solidarity.
