DİSK issues sharp response to 'Absolute Nullity' ruling: 'There is no power greater than the people, we will defend our rights'

The repercussions of the 'Absolute Nullity' ruling, which has raised tensions in the political arena, continue. In a written statement released following the decision, DİSK characterized the ongoing process as a "severe intervention against democratic rights." The statement placed strong emphasis on the founding principle of the Republic of Turkey: "Sovereignty belongs unconditionally to the nation."

"The Judiciary Has Been Politicized, Elected Officials Are Targeted"

The text, which criticized the criminal justice policies pursued by the government, argued that the judicial mechanism has been transformed into a political tool. Emphasizing that no domination can be established over the power derived from the people, DİSK included the following remarks:

"Let those who attempt to maintain their power through policies of oppression, by imprisoning those elected by the people and politicizing the judiciary, know that there is no power greater than the people."

The statement also touched upon the mission DİSK has undertaken throughout its history, recalling that the confederation has always stood on the side of democracy and has been an uncompromising defender of democratic rights.

"Today, the duty that falls upon us, especially the working class, is to defend our last remaining democratic rights and our right to vote and be elected to the end, 'without considering the possibilities and conditions of the situation in which we find ourselves'."
