Diyanet also acknowledges poverty: 'Fitra can be given to retirees and minimum wage earners'

The lowest pension for 2025 was set at 14 thousand 469 TL, and the minimum wage at 22 thousand 104 TL. Salary increases, which remained far below expectations, have already begun to melt away in the very first month. According to Türk-İş data, the Diyanet has also had to acknowledge the struggle for survival faced by millions of minimum wage earners and retirees living below the hunger threshold. 

According to the report in Sözcü, in a statement made by the Presidency of Religious Affairs, in response to a question on the Alo 190 Diyanet fatwa line regarding who can be given fitra, the answer was given: "If you think that a person receiving a minimum wage or a pension cannot make ends meet during the month of Ramadan, if they have no side income, if they are renting a house, or even if they own a home but cannot pay for their fuel, etc., you can give it to them.” 

The response also included the phrase, "Provided that they are not among those you are legally obligated to support." 

'CITIZENS ARE IN A STATE WHERE THEY CANNOT EVEN AFFORD SUHOOR' 

The Presidency of Religious Affairs had announced that the daily amount of fitra for the month of Ramadan this year is 180 TL. Expressing her reaction, CHP Ankara Deputy Semra Dinçer stated, “With the fitra amount announced as 180 liras, based on the cost of two meals for one person, citizens have reached a point where they cannot even afford suhoor today.”
