Diyanet targets freedom of dress in Friday sermon: Support from reactionary Halil Konakcı was swift!

The Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet) targeted freedom of dress in its sermon published on Friday, August 1. In the sermon titled "Modesty: God's Command, a Requirement of Human Nature," short clothes and transparent garments were described as contrary to God's command to cover up. The sermon argued that the clothing industry, media circles, and fashion designers are spreading a culture of nudity and that covering up is being devalued. Diyanet stated, "Wearing short clothes and transparent garments is forbidden (haram) and is a violation of God's commands."

"CHALLENGING MORAL RULES"

The sermon emphasized that clothing that reveals body contours is not just a "style" or "image" but a "violation of God's commands." Diyanet stated that wearing inappropriate clothing in social spaces, and especially in institutional settings, is a moral offense. "This is not modernity, it is primitivism. Everyone who remains silent while moral and decency standards are violated bears a great burden of sin," it said.

TATTOOS AND AESTHETICS ALSO TARGETED

In the sermon, Diyanet also issued warnings regarding tattoos and plastic surgery. The phrases "Changing the body solely for the purpose of being admired without a medical necessity is falling into the devil's trap" were used. It was stated that getting tattoos is contrary to the hadiths of the Prophet and is considered forbidden. Changing one's natural state through plastic surgery was also defined as rebellion against God.

The sermon expressed that posts on screens and digital platforms featuring clothing not approved by the religion are "ugly" and "forbidden." It was emphasized that such behaviors are morally dangerous for society. A verse included in the sermon read, "Those who want indecency to spread among the believers will have a painful punishment in this world and in the hereafter."

KONAKCI SUPPORTED THE SERMON, OPPOSITION MEDIA TARGETED

Following the Diyanet's sermon, bigot Halil Konakcı made statements on his social media account, supporting the Diyanet's sermon and targeting 4 opposition media channels, including Halk TV, Tele 1, Sözcü, and Cumhuriyet. Making a statement via social media, Konakcı said, "Today, the agenda of Islam-hating news channels and secularists like Halk TV, Tele 1, Sözcü, and Cumhuriyet will be the 'Friday sermon.' I will say it in advance, I will also give my sermon based on the same text. 'Nudity is not modernity or civilization, it is primitivism, it is indecency.'"
