The Diyarbakır Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has expressed an opinion in favor of acquittal in its final submission regarding the three police officers on trial for the murder of former Diyarbakır Bar Association President Tahir Elçi on November 28, 2015.
Evaluating the development, Diyarbakır Bar Association President Atty. Nahit Eren stated, "It is not a prosecutor's opinion that surprises us. Eight years later, in the case of our Bar Association President Atty. Tahir Elçi, who was murdered in front of dozens of cameras, the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has submitted an opinion for the acquittal of the defendants. As of today, the opinion has been served to us.
'THAT DARK DAY WILL BE ILLUMINATED'
The hearing will be held on June 12. We hope that the judges will accept our requests and the issues regarding evidence that we have demanded to be examined until today at the hearing on June 12. There is much work for the court to do.
That dark day will certainly be illuminated. Even if we are not very hopeful for June 12, our struggle will continue," he said.
WHY DID TAHIR ELÇI DIE?
On November 28, 2015, in the Sur district of Diyarbakır, a clash broke out on Yenikapı Street, where Tahir Elçi was holding a press conference in front of the Four-Legged Minaret, which had been damaged during the trench operations.
He died due to a bullet hitting his head as a result of fire opened during the clashes.
The UK-based organization Forensic Architecture, which prepared a report on which weapon the bullet that caused Tahir Elçi's death came from and who might have fired it, concluded that Elçi was killed by a bullet fired from the weapon of one of the three police officers.
Following the death of Elçi, which received extensive coverage in the world press, protest demonstrations took place in many cities, and clashes occasionally occurred between police and protesters during these demonstrations. Elçi was laid to rest in the Yeniköy Cemetery in the Bağlar district of Diyarbakır.
