DMM issues statement on claims that 'Kuvayi Milliye Destanı' was banned

CHP Istanbul Deputy Gamze Akkuş İlgezdi claimed that the "Kuvayi Milliye Destanı," featuring illustrations by Nuri Kurtcebe based on the work of the great master Nâzım Hikmet, was being removed from public libraries under the pretext of "inappropriate content."

Regarding the matter, the Presidency's Directorate of Communications Center for Combating Disinformation (DMM) stated that the claim that "The Ministry of Culture and Tourism has banned Nâzım Hikmet Ran's 'Kuvayi Milliye' work in public libraries" is not true.

In a statement made on the DMM's social media account, it was noted that the work in question is not Nâzım Hikmet Ran's original "Kuvayi Milliye" work, but rather a graphic novel version by a cartoonist that depicts Nâzım Hikmet's "Kuvayi Milliye Destanı" poem through illustrations.

The statement explained that the book in question contains pages with sexually explicit depictions, adding, "For this reason, it was not deemed appropriate for the book to be kept in the general access area of libraries, which are used by citizens of all age groups."

The statement reported that the work continues to be available in libraries in a way that children cannot access it, and noted the following:

"Thousands of copies of dozens of works by Nâzım Hikmet, including various editions of works titled 'Kuvayi Milliye' or 'Kuvayi Milliye Destanı' containing his poems, remain accessible and available for loan by everyone in libraries."
