Do not open this message: Election ballot boxes are the scammers' new trap

As the March 31, 2024 local elections approach, new tactics used by scammers have emerged.

Reaching citizens via email and SMS, scammers are using the websites of political parties and the Supreme Election Council.

According to a report by the pro-government Sabah newspaper; it is observed that scammers sending messages or emails stating 'The ballot box where you will vote in the election has changed' have also copied the "Supreme Election Council Voter Inquiry Service" page exactly.

Users are asked to perform an election registration inquiry via this link. Citizens who want to perform the inquiry are asked for contact information such as their address and phone number.

EXPERTS WARNED: DO NOT CLICK ON SUSPICIOUS LINKS

Experts state that after the final lists are announced, the location of the ballot box where any voter will cast their vote will not change, and they warn, "Do not open it when a suspicious link arrives."

Voters can check where and at which ballot box they will vote via the YSK website, e-Devlet, the YSK voter inquiry mobile application, or the YSK Call Center at 444 9 975.

The YSK has requested that no attention be paid to emails, calls, or messages received outside of these channels.

SCAMMERS ARE USING LIVE DATA

With digitalization, the methods resorted to by scammers are also changing.

So much so that shortly after you receive your YSK voter notification card, or regarding the vehicle you sold, your health results, or even the purchases you made online, many records that enter the system can instantly fall into the hands of scammers.

NOT JUST SMS

Scammers are targeting the same fraud not only through SMS but also through calls. In calls usually coming from numbers starting with 444 or 850, the fraud process is initiated by saying, "We are calling from the YSK. There is a change regarding your voter registration. We need some information to correct it." The YSK states that after the final lists are released, the location of the ballot box where any voter will cast their vote will not change.
