Doctors accused of negligence: Neşe Özkan's grave to be exhumed

Neşe Özkan, a social media influencer known for her participation in the program "Gelin Evi," underwent a tummy tuck and breast reduction surgery on December 19.

After the 5-hour operation, Neşe Özkan was taken to the recovery room, but was later moved to the intensive care unit due to shortness of breath. The 27-year-old woman suffered cardiac arrest and passed away.

Neşe Özkan's husband, İskender Özkan, stated that there was negligence on the part of the hospital in his wife's death and made the following remarks:

"My wife and I have two children. She had given birth twice by cesarean section. She had been saying for years that she wanted to have cosmetic surgery because of sagging in her abdomen. We had postponed this due to some financial difficulties. She had made an appointment for the 18th. Some tests were performed, but I think some were not.

"I HAD TRUSTED THE HOSPITAL"

I did not see any documentation regarding my wife's heart rhythm. Some tests were done. The hospital wanted us to sign a document. One of the questions they asked my wife was about heart conditions. She informed them that she had undergone surgery at the age of 16-17 because she had a hole in her heart. The anesthesiologist also said, 'There is no problem with your heart.' I had trusted the hospital.

"I THINK THE HOSPITAL IS WITHHOLDING INFORMATION"

They told me that my wife's heart had stopped and then she had woken up. I could not go inside the operating room to see my wife; I do not know if she woke up or not. I think the hospital provided false information and is withholding information. I have initiated legal proceedings. The operating room camera footage is with the police. I have requested that it be examined.

"BECAUSE MY WIFE WANTED IT"

Everyone must be wondering why a mother of two would need a tummy tuck. My wife was a strong woman who was a mother of two, held onto life tightly, and fought for her own ideals and dreams. I was always by her side. She never left our home lacking. After having children, my wife truly lived this life for two. My wife started using social media as a hobby. Later, as she progressed on social media, she realized she could earn an income. She relieved her stress there. In the end, she even got a job thanks to social media. Why did she have the surgery? Because my wife wanted it."

GRAVE EXHUMED

İskender Özkan's lawyer, Ayşegül Mermer, issued a press release announcing that Neşe Özkan's grave had been opened for autopsy procedures. In the press release, Ayşegül Mermer stated the following:

"A judicial process has been initiated to uncover all those responsible and all instances of negligence regarding the death of Neşe Özkan, who passed away on December 18, 2024, following cosmetic surgery.

My client İskender Özkan's late wife, Neşe Özkan, underwent tummy tuck, liposuction, and mastopexy (breast lift) surgeries simultaneously at the Private Bilge Hospital, facilitated by the Vita Esthetic Beauty Center and performed by Op. Dr. Murat Acar. Despite Neşe Özkan declaring that she had undergone heart surgery in the past, she was directed to surgery without the necessary tests being performed and without her consent regarding the risks, disregarding human life. Furthermore, the fact that her doctor was not in the operating room during the surgery and did not monitor the patient's condition, along with many other ongoing instances of negligence, led to her death through intentional actions.

Although Neşe Özkan's death was suspicious, no autopsy was performed. Our request to the Gaziosmanpaşa Chief Public Prosecutor's Office in Istanbul to have Özkan's grave in Bursa opened and an autopsy performed to identify those responsible and the negligent and intentional actions was deemed appropriate by the prosecutor's office. The body, which was removed from the grave after necessary precautions were taken, was transferred to the Bursa Forensic Medicine Institute for autopsy procedures.

We believe that all those responsible and all instances of negligence regarding her death will be revealed following Neşe Özkan's autopsy."
