Does brushing your teeth break the fast? The Diyanet has a warning!
Brushing your teeth does not break the fast, but the Diyanet has an important warning regarding this matter.
With the arrival of the month of Ramadan, many questions regarding fasting are being raised. One of these is the question, "Does brushing your teeth break the fast?"
The Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet) responded to the question, "Does brushing your teeth break the fast?" by stating, "Just as rinsing the mouth with water without letting it reach the throat does not break the fast, brushing your teeth does not break it either. However, if toothpaste or water is swallowed, the fast is broken."
The Diyanet issued a warning on this subject, stating, "Considering the possibility of breaking the fast, it is appropriate to brush your teeth before imsak (the start of the fast) or after iftar (the breaking of the fast), and if they are to be brushed while fasting, it is advisable not to use toothpaste."
