Double Ramadan in 2030: Fasting will be observed twice in the same year!

According to the lunar month calculations of the High Board of Religious Affairs of the Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet), the month of Ramadan will be experienced twice in 2030.

While the first Ramadan will begin on January 5, 2030, and end within the same year, the second Ramadan will begin on December 26, 2030, and extend into 2031.

Hümeyra Nur İşlek, an astronomer at the High Board of Religious Affairs, stated in her explanation that the Gregorian calendar is calculated based on the solar year, while the Hijri calendar is based on the lunar year, and that there is a 10-11 day difference between these two calendars each year.

Explaining that the Hijri year shifts backward each year within the Gregorian calendar, İşlek said, "We see this by experiencing it. The month of Ramadan can fall in both summer and winter. The Hijri calendar rotates through all the seasons."

Stating that the beginnings of lunar months are determined according to the movements of the moon, İşlek said that religious days, nights, and holidays are also determined in accordance with these calculations.

"35 DAYS OF FASTING WILL BE OBSERVED IN 2030"

Noting that religious days and crescent visibility maps up to the year 2035 are published on the website of the Presidency of Religious Affairs, İşlek said, "Due to the 10-11 day difference between the Gregorian calendar and the Hijri calendar, Ramadan will begin on January 5 in 2030, and 30 days of fasting will be observed. In the same year, Ramadan will begin again on December 26, and 5 more days of fasting will be observed at the end of the year. Thus, a total of 35 days of fasting will be observed in 2030."

Reminding that similar situations have occurred before, İşlek said, "There were also two Ramadan starts in 1900, 1932, 1964, and 1997. These took place in January and December. Similar situations will occur in the coming years. We have not yet calculated beyond 2035, but it is estimated that the same event will repeat in the years 2062-2063. This is a situation that occurs approximately every 32-33 years."

She also emphasized that all religious days between 1900 and 2035 are accessible on the Presidency of Religious Affairs' website "vakithesaplama.diyanet.gov.tr".
