Early warning station being established for a potential Marmara earthquake: Alerts will be sent to 21 institutions!

Boğaziçi University Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute is installing new "Multidisciplinary Tsunami Observation and Early Warning Stations" around the Sea of Marmara and the Princes' Islands.

According to a written statement from the university, work has begun on 20 new "Multidisciplinary Tsunami Observation and Early Warning Stations" to be located around the Sea of Marmara and the Islands, with support provided by the Presidency of Strategy and Budget within the scope of the Istanbul Governorship Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Plan.

With the new tsunami early warning systems, the first of which has become operational at the Kartal Municipality Water Sports Center, tsunamis that may occur in the Sea of Marmara following earthquakes will be monitored using a multidisciplinary approach.

WARNING MESSAGES TO 21 INSTITUTIONS IN 15 DIFFERENT COUNTRIES

In the statement, Prof. Dr. Haluk Özener, Director of the Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute, noted that with these new stations, early warning messages can be sent to 21 institutions in 15 different countries, not only in Turkey but also in seas connected to the Mediterranean, Aegean, and Black Sea.

Özener said, "Our goal is to monitor the tsunami potential that may arise after a possible Marmara earthquake and to prevent potential loss of life by transmitting early warning messages on this matter."

45 TSUNAMI WARNINGS ISSUED SINCE 2012

Stating that the institute has transmitted 45 tsunami warning messages to its subscribers, primarily AFAD, since July 1, 2012, in its capacity as the "National Tsunami Warning Center," Özener said, "With our new stations that we are establishing within the scope of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Plan, sea level changes will be monitored even more closely 24/7 throughout the entire Marmara Region, especially in Istanbul. Our multidisciplinary stations consist of a sea level sensor, an accelerometer, meteorological sensors, and a GNSS receiver. Our goal is to monitor the tsunami potential that may arise after a possible Marmara earthquake and to prevent potential loss of life by transmitting early warning messages on this matter."
