Earthquake commentary from Prof. Dr. Hasan Sözbilir: He pointed to 3 fault lines

Earthquake commentary from Prof. Dr. Hasan Sözbilir: He pointed to 3 fault lines

In a written statement, Prof. Dr. Sözbilir pointed out that the epicenter of the earthquake, which occurred at 09:31, corresponds to the south of Narlı, where the first rupture of the February 6, 2023, Pazarcık earthquake took place, and that this location is also at the northern end of the Sakçagöz Fault, which belongs to the Dead Sea Fault.

Stating that the branches of the Dead Sea Fault within Turkey's borders continue southward as the Sakçagöz Fault, Yesemek Fault, and Hacıpaşa Fault, Sözbilir said, "It extends further south, passing through countries such as Syria, Lebanon, and Israel, reaching a length of up to 1,000 kilometers."

HE EXPLAINED THE TRENCH STUDY

Reminding that they conducted a trench study on the Narlı fault and the surface rupture in this section in August as part of the Project for Investigating the Paleoseismological Characteristics of Active Faults in Turkey, Sözbilir noted the following:

"Our observations were that the southern part of the Narlı fault, whose northern section ruptured during the February 6 earthquake, had not yet completed its rupture. We had shared this view with the public. With this earthquake, we have seen that a rupture corresponding to a magnitude of 5 has occurred in the southern part of the fault. From now on, it is expected that the ruptures will migrate toward the Sakçagöz, Yesemek, and Hacıpaşa faults.

A similar situation is occurring at the end of the second earthquake centered in Ekinözü on February 6, 2023, near Göksun. Hundreds of earthquakes have occurred here since the major earthquake. A certain amount of stress must have accumulated on the Savrun Fault, just south of this point. Likewise, there is also stress accumulation from the vicinity of Pütürge, at the northernmost end of the surface rupture formed by the earthquake, toward Bingöl."

Prof. Dr. Sözbilir also announced that they will examine the Hacıpaşa and Yesemek faults on-site next week to obtain more reliable data.
