Earthquake expert warns: Here are the regions with the riskiest soil in Istanbul

The Geology of Istanbul Symposium, organized in memory of Prof. Dr. Aral Okay in partnership with Istanbul Kültür University, the TMMOB Chamber of Geological Engineers, and the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB), brought together earth science experts on December 14-15.

Speaking at the symposium, Prof. Dr. Ziyadin Çakır issued important warnings regarding a potential Marmara earthquake.

According to a report in Milliyet, Prof. Dr. Ziyadin Çakır described his study, in which he analyzed surface deformations occurring in Istanbul since 2014 using the InSAR method with satellite imagery. Highlighting surface deformations in areas such as Avcılar, the Golden Horn (Haliç), Alibeyköy, and Kurbağalıdere, with a particular focus on Büyükçekmece and Küçükçekmece, Çakır addressed the risks posed especially by stream beds and reclaimed land.

Stating that the earthquake will cause greater damage in areas experiencing surface deformation, Çakır said, "Haramidere is the place with the greatest surface deformation. Then comes Ayamama. Vertical deformation is observed in Kurbağalıdere in Kadıköy, Çırpıcı Creek in Zeytinburnu, Kağıthane, Alibeyköy, all coastal areas, and reclaimed areas including Yenikapı and Maltepe."
