Earthquake swarm continues: Long-awaited statement on Sındırgı from Naci Görür

A 5.1 magnitude earthquake occurred last night in the Sındırgı district of Balıkesir. While the earthquake swarm in the region has caused concern among citizens, a notable assessment came from Geoscientist Prof. Dr. Naci Görür.

Görür noted the following in his post on his X account:

"Recently, earthquakes above 4 in magnitude have started to occur around Sındırgı. The public and my colleagues are anxious. We need to look at the issue from a broader perspective. For example: Western Anatolia is undergoing N-S extension due to escape tectonics. The crust remaining to the north of the Bozdağ Horst is moving northward along the listric fault of the horst. As a result of this movement, grabens and cross-grabens are formed, destroyed, and a complex tectonic structure emerges. In many places, the crust is also thinning, and magma is rising into the environment. Therefore, stating the magnitude or location of the earthquake is not enough. It is also necessary to provide the angle, direction, nature, and dimensions of the earthquake plane."
