Minimum wage statement and call from Ekrem İmamoğlu: 'Use your decree power immediately'

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu evaluated the 22,104 TL minimum wage announced for 2024. In a post on his social media account, İmamoğlu stated that the announced figure is insufficient, criticized the government, and issued a call to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Drawing attention to the high cost of living in Istanbul, İmamoğlu said, “22,104 lira is not even enough for a single month's rent in Istanbul.

This decision is practically mocking 9 million minimum wage earners and their families,” he stated.

Emphasizing that they will be forced to significantly increase the social assistance budget as the IMM, İmamoğlu criticized the government's economic policies.

"PROVIDE AN ADDITIONAL INCREASE TO THE MINIMUM WAGE"

Making two suggestions to President Erdoğan, İmamoğlu said that an additional increase should be made to the minimum wage and that it should be announced that the determined figure is only a 6-month arrangement.

“Use the decree power you use so frequently tomorrow to provide an additional increase to the minimum wage and announce the good news that a new arrangement will be made in 6 months,” he said.

Calling on the government not to pass the bill for poor economic policies on to the public, İmamoğlu stated that social assistance should be increased and justice in income distribution should be ensured.
