Ekrem İmamoğlu shares post on Edanur Gezer: 'We will not leave those responsible unpunished'

5-year-old Edanur Gezer lost her life on April 26 after falling into a water-filled pit created during an excavation project carried out by the İBB at Menekşe Beach Park in Küçükçekmece. İBB Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu made a statement regarding the incident on his social media account.

İmamoğlu said, "We are mourning the loss of little Edanur, who passed away in a park belonging to the İBB. The inspection process we launched immediately after the incident will be completed soon. We will not leave those responsible unpunished. The judicial authorities' investigation is also ongoing. While we are experiencing the pain of our little child, we are also watching with shame as this incident is being turned into material for political exploitation, as is always the case."

'REQUIRES INVESTIGATION'

İmamoğlu continued his words as follows:

"In this country, we have lost many of our citizens, sometimes due to negligence in train accidents, and sometimes due to negligence in mining disasters. We do not give credence to the so-called conscientious outbursts of those who remained silent during these events, or those who could say, ‘Death is in the nature of this business. They died beautifully.’ A 5-year-old child of ours has unfortunately been torn from life.

Moreover, the family tragedy that emerged with the incident is proof of how unsuccessful the government has been in protecting and looking after our children. Undoubtedly, just like the investigation into the incident, the fact that a 5-year-old child was separated from her parents and that it took 2 days even for her funeral to be held also requires investigation.

Following the loss of a child, I leave the statements made by high-ranking statesmen solely for political motives to the discretion of the conscientious public, and I pray for God's mercy upon our child."
