Ekrem İmamoğlu's striking remarks on Cemal Enginyurt: Has a 'Chief Public Prosecutor's Office of Turkey' been established?
Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu has reacted to the launch of an ex officio investigation into Istanbul MP Cemal Enginyurt—who resigned from the Democrat Party and joined the CHP at today's parliamentary group meeting—over accusations of "insulting and threatening the President" following his speech in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM).
Izmir MP Sabri Uzun and Istanbul MP Cemal Enginyurt resigned from the Democrat Party and joined the CHP. An ex officio investigation was launched against Enginyurt, whose party pin was attached by CHP leader Özgür Özel today, following his remarks at the group meeting.
In a statement regarding the matter, the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office said, "An ex officio investigation has been launched against Istanbul MP Cemal Enginyurt for the crimes of insulting and threatening the President due to the words he uttered today at his party's group meeting regarding the President. Presented for public information."
İmamoğlu reacted to the "insulting and threatening the President" investigation launched against Enginyurt in a post on the social media platform X.
İmamoğlu used the following expressions in his post:
"Has a 'Chief Public Prosecutor's Office of Turkey' been established without us knowing?
Just like with Victory Party Chairman Mr. Ümit Özdağ, the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation into our CHP MP Mr. Cemal Enginyurt.
The question marks in society regarding trust in the law, state seriousness, and decorum are growing increasingly.
I am saddened that we are forced to express this reaction in order to protect the dignity of our judiciary and its esteemed members. I also convey my best wishes to Mr. Enginyurt."
